      Information

Coastal scenes are an important theme of my paintings; beside the sea, dunes and birds situated at the coast also take part of my paintings.
Original I am from The Hague, where a lot of my seascapes were painted, but nowadays I live and work in Wassenaar, a village near The Hague.
I try to reproduce the space and light atmosphere of the coast in my pastels.
Another subject I like to paint are still lifes in which objects of nature have always an important role. I use to work with pastel mainly which I use in a painting manner.

In October 2010 I will give a workshop pastel techniques in the art library in Rijswijk.

Pastel
Pastels are made from pure pigments which are mixed with a binder to a paste and then formed into sticks. So a pastel painting is very durable.
The medium pastel can be used in a drawing as well as in a painting way.
Pastel is discovered in Italy at the end of the 15th century and was also used by Leonardo da Vinci. In the 18th century it was a popular medium. For the abundancy of colours artists used it as an alternative for oil paint. The French impressionists Manet and Degas also painted with pastel.
A pastel painting or drawing is fragile so the art work has to be protected by framing it with an acid-free passe-partout behind glass.
